Deadly New Year’s Trend Strikes Japan Again!

Despite numerous public warnings, the consumption of treats made from pounded and steamed rice has tragically resulted in suffocation-related deaths almost every year, with a particular impact on elderly individuals. A survey conducted by the Tokyo Fire Department and reported by local media revealed that between 2019 and 2023, a total of 368 individuals required hospitalization due to incidents involving mochi or similar items becoming lodged in their throats. Shockingly, over 90% of these cases involved individuals aged 65 and above.

In the year 2022, four elderly women met a tragic fate as they choked to death on these traditional rice cakes, while an additional 12 individuals had to be hospitalized due to similar incidents. Looking back to 2015, a total of nine individuals were suspected to have lost their lives while partaking in this annual culinary tradition.

One remarkable incident dating back to the year 2001 highlights the potential dangers associated with consuming these rice-based treats. A woman became a hero as she successfully saved her father’s life by utilizing a vacuum cleaner to dislodge a piece of mochi from the throat of the 70-year-old man.
