Deadly Bird Flu Outbreak Claims 20 Big Cats at WA Sanctuary!

In early December, the Wild Felid Advocacy Center of Washington faced a crisis when its feline residents fell ill with a mysterious illness, leading to a temporary closure of the facility. By December 6, health officials confirmed that the cats had contracted bird flu, a highly pathogenic avian influenza.

Tragically, by December 20, over half of the shelter’s cats had been affected by the bird flu, resulting in the heartbreaking loss of 20 felines, including a Bengal tiger and other exotic species. The outbreak prompted the shelter to announce a closure to the public for quarantine measures to protect the remaining animals.

The bird flu, primarily spread through respiratory secretions and bird contact, proved fatal for the infected cats. Symptoms progressed rapidly, resembling pneumonia, with a swift decline leading to death within 24 hours.

Despite the sanctuary’s efforts to contain the outbreak through stringent biosecurity measures, quarantining, and disinfection protocols, the loss of beloved residents was significant. The center is now working closely with federal and state health authorities, as well as local officials, to manage the virus and safeguard the surviving animals.

Community support is crucial as the shelter faces mounting medical costs and financial strain due to the outbreak. Those wishing to assist in the ongoing care of the animals can make donations through PayPal on the shelter’s website.
