D.C. United appointed Rene Weiler as their new head coach last Wednesday, following the dismissal of Troy Lesesne six days earlier. Weiler, aged 51, has managed clubs in various countries including Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Egypt, and Japan since 2009. Most notably, he led Swiss Super League team Servette FC to victory in the Swiss Cup in 2024 before assuming the role of sporting director in June of the same year. D.C. general manager and chief soccer officer Ally Mackay praised Weiler’s tactical expertise, ability to instill a clear playing style, and knack for getting the best out of his players. Weiler’s track record of success, which includes titles in Belgium and Egypt, makes him well-suited to lead D.C. United towards establishing a competitive identity. Weiler expressed confidence in the club’s direction and is eager to work towards returning D.C. United to championship contention. The team, currently positioned 13th in the Eastern Conference, faces the challenge of qualifying for the MLS Cup Playoffs after a five-season drought. Lesesne, who recorded a mixed record during his tenure, was relieved of his duties on July 10, with academy director Kevin Flanagan stepping in as interim coach.
