Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen visited Greenland to discuss enhanced Arctic defense cooperation with the United States and firmly opposed US efforts to annex the semi-autonomous Danish territory. Frederiksen emphasized the importance of maintaining the current world order and rejected the idea of annexation for security reasons.
During a joint news conference with Greenlandic leaders, Frederiksen extended an invitation to the US to collaborate on Arctic security with Denmark and Greenland. She stressed that annexing another country was not acceptable and highlighted the need for unity in the face of external pressure.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, where Rubio recognized Greenland’s right to self-determination. The US State Department reiterated the strong relationship between the US and Denmark.
In response to US Vice President JD Vance’s comments about Greenland’s security, Frederiksen defended Denmark’s efforts in the region and outlined Denmark’s security commitments, including new Arctic ships, drones, and satellite capabilities. She expressed readiness to work with the US to enhance security in the Arctic.
