Democratic Senator Andy Kim from New Jersey expressed concern about the current approach to addressing waste and inefficiencies within the government. He noted that the sudden removal of federal employees, only to realize their necessity in critical areas such as bird flu and nuclear regulation, leads to unnecessary chaos. Despite the discord, Kim emphasized his willingness to collaborate across party lines, stating, “I would have been prepared to work in a bipartisan way. I still am.”
Senators Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin echoed the sentiment, advocating for cuts to wasteful spending without specifying where those cuts should be made. The emergence of the cryptocurrency Dogecoin (DOGE) within federal agencies over the past month has shed light on billions of dollars deemed wasteful by the previous Trump administration.
Democratic lawmakers voiced their disapproval of Elon Musk’s approach to reducing federal spending. Criticism was particularly directed at DOGE’s targeting of community health centers in Medicaid, as well as other essential services. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer accused DOGE of jeopardizing services vital to American families.
In a surprising development, President Trump suggested allocating 20% of the savings generated by DOGE directly to taxpayers through personal checks, while an additional 20% would be utilized to reduce the national debt.
