Federal food regulators have issued a warning regarding the recall of eggs sold at Costco stores due to potential exposure to salmonella. The affected product has been upgraded to the highest risk level by the authorities. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initially reported on November 27 that approximately 10,800 units of organic, pasture-raised, 24-count eggs under Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand were being recalled by New York-based Handsome Brook Farms.
However, in a recent update released on Friday, the FDA reclassified the recall as a Class I, indicating a significant risk of serious health consequences or even death associated with the use or exposure to the tainted product. The specific egg cartons in question were distributed in 25 Costco stores located in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, beginning on November 22.
The eggs labeled as “Organic Pasture Raised” were sold in packs of 24, bearing a Universal Product Code (UPC) of 9661910680 and a use-by date of January 5, 2025. Consumers who have purchased these eggs are advised to return them to Costco for a full refund, as per the FDA’s instructions.
