Controversy Surrounds 64-Team World Cup Proposal in 2030!

CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani opposes the plans to expand the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams, joining others who share his sentiment. The tournament, primarily hosted by Spain, Morocco, and Portugal, with the opening matches set to be held in Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina as part of the World Cup’s 100th anniversary celebrations. The proposal to expand the tournament comes after the decision to increase the number of teams from 32 to 48 for the 2026 World Cup, hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico. Montagliani expressed his concerns, stating that he believes expanding the tournament further could have negative effects on the football ecosystem. UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin and the Asian Football Confederation have also voiced their opposition to the idea, citing potential chaos and a significant increase in the number of games. FIFA mentioned that the proposal was raised at a recent council meeting but did not provide a timeline for further discussions.
