Classic Detective Reboot Bergerac Sparks High International Interest

Excitement is mounting as the highly anticipated reboot of the classic detective TV show “Bergerac” prepares for its UK premiere later this month. The rights to the first season of the show have already been snapped up by nine countries, marking a surge in international demand for this reimagined series.

According to Visit Jersey, the island’s tourism board, the sale of the rights to various countries ahead of the UK launch is a promising sign for Jersey’s economy. The government is expected to recoup a portion of the £1.2 million it invested in the show, thanks to a 12.5% commission on international sales.

“Bergerac” is a modern take on the beloved 1980s BBC detective drama that originally starred John Nettles and was set against the picturesque backdrop of Jersey. Ben Bickerton of BlackLight TV, the producers behind the reboot, expressed confidence that the new series will capture the hearts of both loyal fans of the original and a fresh global audience eager to explore the mysteries of Bergerac and the enchanting island of Jersey.

Distributors Banijay Rights have confirmed that the reboot has already been acquired by broadcasters in seven northern European countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium, and Sweden, as well as in far-flung destinations such as New Zealand and Australia. Negotiations are underway to bring “Bergerac” to even more international viewers in the near future.

While the original series found its home on BBC One, the reboot will make its debut on UKTV, with the premiere episode scheduled to air on February 27, 2025. The move to a new platform opens up fresh avenues for audiences to delve into the thrilling world of “Bergerac” and follow the captivating investigations set to unfold in the reimagined series.
