Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke at the opening ceremony of the China-CELAC Forum in Beijing on Tuesday, without directly mentioning Donald Trump. Xi emphasized China’s stability and rational approach, contrasting it with the unpredictable trade war initiated by the US. He stressed that bullying and coercion only lead to isolation and highlighted the importance of collaboration in the face of rising geopolitical tensions and protectionism.
The trade war between the world’s two largest economies has impacted over 30 Latin American and Caribbean countries, many of which participated in the forum. Xi expressed Beijing’s readiness to work with these nations amid global challenges. While Trump has found allies in some Latin American leaders, his actions and rhetoric have alienated much of the region.
China has actively engaged with Latin American and Caribbean countries, emphasizing the principles of independence and self-determination. This approach contrasts with historical attempts by the US to exert influence in the region. Chinese investments and projects in Latin America, including partnerships in trade and infrastructure development, have strengthened economic ties between the regions.
Latin American countries see China as a stabilizing force and a valuable opportunity for growth and development. China’s influence in the region, particularly in trade and infrastructure, has grown significantly in recent years. Despite some concerns and criticisms, the relationship between Latin America and China continues to deepen, with mutual benefits for both parties.
Fernández Melleda pointed out that China’s approach appears to be more balanced compared to the U.S. and European colonial powers. Xi announced on Tuesday that China plans to increase imports from Latin America, encourage Chinese companies to boost investments, and provide 66 billion yuan ($9.1 billion) in new credit to support financing in the Latin American and Caribbean regions. Additionally, Xi expressed interest in further integrating Latin America into China’s Belt and Road infrastructure initiative. Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who previously faced threats of tariffs from the U.S., announced on Monday that his country will also participate in the Belt and Road project. The report was contributed by Eric Baculinao in Beijing and Jennifer Jett in Hong Kong.
