Two police officers were found to have not acted improperly after shooting and killing an individual who was under the influence of drugs and wielding a chainsaw at a senior living home in Illinois last December. Daniel Escalera, 41, confronted the officers while high on methamphetamines and threatening with a chainsaw at the River Glen senior facility in St. Charles, located approximately 40 miles west of Chicago. Despite initial attempts to subdue him with a taser, the officers were left with no choice but to shoot him multiple times as he continued his dangerous behavior. An investigation concluded that the officers’ use of deadly force was justified in order to prevent harm to themselves and others. The incident, captured on bodycam footage, showed the intense and dangerous confrontation between the officers and Escalera. The officer involved had to react swiftly to the escalating situation, eventually leading to the tragic death of Escalera. The Kane County State Attorney’s Office announced the closure of the investigation, commending the officers for their efforts to de-escalate the situation before resorting to lethal force and acknowledging the thorough work of the Illinois State Police in examining the incident.
