Flash flooding in central Texas has subsided, but more storms are expected to hit the region, posing a threat of further damage. The National Weather Service warned of thunderstorms with excessive rainfall and potential flooding on Monday and Tuesday. A flood watch was in place for more than a dozen counties, including Kerr County where over 100 people lost their lives due to flooding on the Fourth of July. With more than 160 people still missing in Kerr County, the situation remains critical.
Rainfall amounts of 2-5 inches, with isolated higher amounts, were forecasted. Kerrville police reported significant rainfall and urged caution near the Guadalupe River. Rescue efforts may extend for several months, with support from various agencies and government officials.
Meanwhile, tragic events unfolded at Camp Mystic, where delays in evacuating campers led to devastating consequences. The camp director and several campers lost their lives in the flood. Volunteers, who had been assisting in rescue operations, were asked to evacuate due to the impending severe weather.
The Kerr County Commissioners’ Court faced scrutiny for the lack of flood warning sirens along the Guadalupe River. Despite challenges, the community has come together with volunteers from various regions offering support to those affected by the ongoing flooding crisis in central Texas.
County officials considered implementing sirens several years ago, but ultimately dismissed the idea due to public pushback about the cost. During a recent meeting, Kelly urged residents to remain patient as search and rescue operations continue to be the top priority amid ongoing recovery efforts. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is cautioning residents affected by flooding to be wary of scammers and impostors posing as FEMA representatives to exploit victims. The agency advises against sharing personal information or financial details with anyone claiming to be a FEMA housing inspector. In San Saba County, the San Saba River has exceeded 30 feet, prompting local officials to issue a mandatory evacuation for parts of the city. As heavy rains continue to slam the area, with significant rainfall reported in various counties, residents are urged to seek higher ground and stay vigilant. The recent flooding events have led to a tragic loss of life and significant damage, underscoring the importance of preparedness and swift action in response to natural disasters.
