In the aftermath of the shocking news, Ed Westwick, aged 37, renowned for his portrayal of Chuck Bass on the original run of the show from 2007 to 2012, expressed his sentiments towards Michelle Trachtenberg in a heartfelt message shared on his Instagram Stories. Accompanied by a picture of her character, Westwick penned, “So saddened to hear of the passing of @michelletrachtenberg. Sending prayers,” together with prayer hands and a white heart emoji.
The creators of the show, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, are also mourning the loss of Trachtenberg. In a joint statement provided to PEOPLE, they expressed their grief, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the news of Michelle’s passing. Michelle was so funny, kind, and talented.” They further added, “Her portrayal of Georgina Sparks was an iconic fan favorite, evolving from a one-season villain to a beloved character appearing over six seasons. She brought joy to our set and will be profoundly missed. Our thoughts are with her family.”
Additionally, Trachtenberg, known for her role as Dawn Summers in the esteemed drama series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, received tributes from several former colleagues, including James Marsters and David Boreanaz. Marsters, who portrayed Spike on the show, expressed his sorrow, stating to PEOPLE, “My heart is heavy today. We have lost a beautiful soul. Michelle was fiercely intelligent, howlingly funny, and a remarkably talented individual. Her passing was untimely, leaving behind a multitude of people who knew and cherished her.”
Boreanaz, who played the vampire Angel, a significant love interest of Buffy, also acknowledged her death, posting on his Instagram Story, “So very sad…horrible news. RIP and prayers to her and her family.”
Apart from her roles in Gossip Girl and Buffy, Trachtenberg showcased her talent in Harriet the Spy, Eurotrip, Ice Princess, and 17 Again. The circumstances surrounding the actress’s passing have not been disclosed. However, a source informed ABC News that she had recently undergone a liver transplant and may have faced complications.
Trachtenberg never disclosed any health issues publicly, but in January 2024, she responded to critics who commented on her appearance after she shared a selfie on Instagram. In a post, she firmly stated, “Fun fact. This is my face. Not malnutrition, no problems. Why spread hate? Get a calendar.” In another post, the actress clarified, “I’ve recently received comments about my appearance. I have never had plastic surgery, I am content and healthy. Check yourselves, haters.”
