On average, Americans visit a doctor four times a year, but those with chronic illnesses or long-term conditions may have more frequent appointments. Fortunately, most of us can rely on medical professionals for assistance when we’re unwell, in need of a vaccine, or seeking a checkup. Every year on March 30, we have the opportunity to show our gratitude by honoring the contributions of physicians on National Doctors’ Day.
The origin of National Doctors’ Day dates back to 1933 when Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of Georgia physician Dr. Charles B. Almond, initiated the idea of recognizing doctors publicly. This led to the tradition of sending cards and laying flowers on doctors’ graves, eventually establishing National Doctors’ Day. Today, healthcare organizations and medical institutions across the country observe this day by showering doctors with cards, gifts, and red carnations as tokens of appreciation from patients and colleagues, symbolizing the significance of their work.
Although March 30 was chosen to mark the first use of anesthesia, National Doctors’ Day serves as a day to honor physicians from all specialties for their expertise, commitment, sacrifices, and compassion in one of the most vital professions in the world. In celebration of National Doctors’ Day, witness the heartwarming video above showcasing a doctor reuniting with individuals whose lives he saved.
