Abby Nurre has had a deep connection to Coastal South Carolina since birth. She considers herself a loyal tourist of Kiawah Island, having visited multiple times each year with her family since the 1980s. Nurre fondly recalls her childhood memories of playing in the waves and searching for sand dollars on the island, and now enjoys creating new memories with her own family. Kiawah Island holds a special place in her heart as a gathering spot for big and small moments, from learning to ride a bike to getting engaged. As a watercolor artist, Nurre was inspired to pay tribute to the island through her work, leading to the creation of her book “Journey To The End Of The Island” in 2024. This book, aimed at children but appreciated by all ages, celebrates the natural wonders of Kiawah Island. Nurre collaborated with experts and biologists to ensure the accuracy of her paintings and the scientific information included in the book. A portion of the proceeds from book sales support the Kiawah Conservancy, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and advocating for the ecological health of the island. Nurre hopes her book will inspire others to appreciate and explore the beauty of Kiawah Island, just as she and her family have for generations.
“I am thrilled to be part of both my studies and the book,” says Nurre, who also hosts watercolor workshops with the non-profit organization. “After all, I was creating the book to inspire others to care for Kiawah’s ecosystem, and the Conservancy exists for the exact same reason.”
“I was driven by my childhood memories of the island. I hope this book shines a light on the natural treasures nestled on this island, motivates people to explore and nurture their curiosity when visiting, and encourages them to hop on beach bikes to witness the beauty,” Nurre shares. “We all have a responsibility to safeguard such precious places in the world.”
