Cannes Film Festival Director Seeks Clarity on Trump Tariff Plans!

CANNES, France (Reuters) – Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fremaux expressed his need for more information before addressing President Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs on foreign films during a press conference on Monday. With just one day left before the festival begins, Fremaux was uncertain about how to respond to the threat of a 100% tariff, given Trump’s track record of making and contradicting statements. Studio executives are also puzzled by the lack of details surrounding the proposed levy. However, Fremaux acknowledged Trump’s concern that the U.S. film industry is facing challenges due to incentives offered by other countries to attract filmmakers. He suggested that the issue of foreign countries penalizing American cinema is worth discussing. The 78th Cannes Film Festival will open on Tuesday with Amelie Bonnin’s debut film “Leave One Day,” marking the first time a first-time filmmaker has opened the festival, according to Fremaux.
