Canadian ‘Super Scooper’ grounded by civilian drone in LA wildfires!

Los Angeles officials have pledged to prosecute unauthorized drone flights following a recent incident where a civilian drone collided with a Canadian firefighting aircraft known as a “Super Scooper” while battling the Palisades Fire. This collision caused the specialized firefighting plane, CL-415, to sustain wing damage and be grounded. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported.

The damaged aircraft, Quebec 1, is currently out of service but is being prioritized for repair with the goal of being back in operation by Monday, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson Erik Scott. The collision led to a temporary halt in all aerial operations responding to the Palisades Fire, as reported by The War Zone, citing Cal Fire.

Authorities have warned that individuals flying drones in restricted airspace over wildfires without permission will face legal repercussions. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman emphasized that violators can expect arrest, prosecution, and punishment to the fullest extent of the law. Additionally, L.A. County Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone stated that measures are being implemented to track and identify drone operators near fire zones.

The Federal Aviation Administration is currently investigating the midair collision, emphasizing that unauthorized drones in firefighting airspace can impede emergency response efforts and endanger lives. The FAA stressed that it has not authorized any non-affiliated drone flights in the restricted areas designated for firefighting operations.

This incident underscores the importance of adhering to airspace regulations and respecting the safety of aerial firefighting crews and resources.
