Burt, the Legendary Australian Crocodile from ‘Crocodile Dundee,’ Passes Away at 90!

Burt, the renowned crocodile who gained notoriety for his appearance in the film “Crocodile Dundee” and captivated audiences with his fierce demeanor and authoritative presence, has passed away. Crocosaurus Cove, the reptile aquarium in Darwin, Australia, confirmed Burt’s death over the weekend, disclosing that the crocodile was at least 90 years old.

Described as having an independent spirit, Burt was known to be a confirmed bachelor, a trait he openly displayed during his earlier years at a crocodile farm, as shared by Crocosaurus Cove in their social media updates. The aquarium expressed sentiments of admiration for Burt, emphasizing his unique personality and the lasting impact he had on those who had the privilege of working with him and the countless visitors who crossed paths with him throughout his lifetime.

A saltwater crocodile, Burt was estimated to exceed 5 meters (16 feet) in length. Originally captured in the Reynolds River in the 1980s, Burt rose to international fame and became one of the most recognizable crocodiles globally during his tenure at Crocosaurus Cove.

Burt’s claim to fame was further solidified by his cameo appearance in the 1986 film “Crocodile Dundee,” starring Paul Hogan as the rugged crocodile hunter Mick Dundee. In a memorable scene from the movie, American character Sue Charlton, portrayed by actress Linda Kozlowski, encounters a perilous situation with a crocodile while attempting to refill her canteen at a watering hole, only to be rescued by Dundee. Burt briefly appears lunging out of the water in the sequence, although a different creature is predominantly featured in the scene as Dundee comes to the rescue. Internet Movie Database notes a discrepancy in the depiction of the crocodile species, citing the showcased creature as an American alligator due to its distinctively blunt snout.

Since 2008, Burt had called the Australian aquarium home, where he resided as a prominent attraction. Crocosaurus Cove, recognized for its innovative “Cage of Death” crocodile dive experience, announced plans to commemorate Burt’s remarkable life with a dedicated sign acknowledging his legacy and the indelible memories and interactions he shared with visitors during his time at the park.
