In Chile’s capital of Santiago on Thursday, firefighters heroically rescued many individuals from a high-rise building containing both commercial and residential units. Using ladder trucks to reach those on windows and balconies, and helicopters to airlift others from the roof, the firefighters acted swiftly after a fire broke out in the basement. Panicked residents signaled for help by waving clothing from upper floors, as thick smoke billowed into the sky. Over 100 people were successfully evacuated without any loss of life, thanks to the efforts of at least 15 fire companies. About 40 individuals received medical attention on the scene, according to Claudio Pavez, a coronel with Chile’s national police force. The building was situated near Plaza de Armas, a vibrant central area in Santiago. Deputy commander of the firefighters, Juan Pablo Slako, confirmed that there were no fatalities or serious injuries, with most experiencing smoke inhalation or shock. Vice superintendent Álvaro Lara assured the public that the fire was contained, emphasizing that the apartments were not affected, and urging calm among residents.
