Envoys from Iran and the United States successfully concluded the initial round of talks in Oman focused on Tehran’s nuclear program, describing the discussions as “positive” and “constructive.” The Trump administration confirmed the agreement to continue the dialogue in the coming week.
The meeting, which lasted nearly two and a half hours, was facilitated by Oman’s Foreign Minister and attended by Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and U.S. Ambassador to Oman Ana Escrogima. They engaged in the conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi just outside the capital city of Muscat.
Witkoff conveyed President Trump’s commitment to resolving differences through dialogue and diplomacy, emphasizing the complexity of the issues at hand. Both sides expressed their willingness to pursue a mutually beneficial outcome and agreed to reconvene the following Saturday.
Araghchi characterized the talks as “constructive” and “promising,” highlighting the respectful atmosphere in which they took place. He affirmed Iran’s firm yet forward-looking stance during the discussions and confirmed the continuation of the process in the near future.
The White House underscored the importance of the dialogue, emphasizing the need for Iran to dismantle its nuclear program as a crucial element of any potential agreement. President Trump has consistently advocated for a new nuclear deal with Iran, stressing the necessity of preventing the country from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Ahead of the talks, Araghchi met with Oman’s Foreign Minister to discuss Iran’s positions, expressing gratitude for Oman’s role in facilitating the negotiations. Witkoff reiterated the administration’s stance on preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons, highlighting the importance of dismantling the existing program.
As discussions progress, the parties are exploring potential compromises to reach a mutually acceptable agreement. Despite differences in initial positions, both sides are committed to engaging in further dialogue to address the complex issues at hand and work towards a peaceful resolution.
“The importance of having a strong verification process in place to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon was emphasized by Witkoff. He mentioned that trust-building is a key aspect of the ongoing negotiations with Tehran. The focus of the talks is on the significance of reaching a deal rather than the specific terms of the agreement.”
