Breaking News: New Details Emerge About Toronto Flight Tragedy

Delta clarified that reports circulating online regarding the alleged incompetence of the captain and first officer in training exercises were untrue. Both crew members hold valid certifications from the Federal Aviation Administration for their respective roles. “All our pilots undergo rigorous training to handle various conditions,” stated Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian in an exclusive interview with CBS Mornings. “They are experienced in flying under diverse circumstances at all the airports within our jurisdiction, so the issue does not lie with their level of expertise.”

The cause of Monday’s tragic incident is still being investigated by the Canadian Transportation Safety Board, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, and the Federal Aviation Administration. Officials confirmed on Tuesday that the aircraft’s black box has been successfully retrieved.

Endeavor Air, the carrier operating the flight, made impact with the runway upon its arrival at Toronto Airport around 1:15 p.m. CST, according to Delta. Disturbing images and footage of the crash depicted the CRJ-900 aircraft engulfed in flames upon impact, subsequently veering off course, losing its tail and both wings while skidding across the airfield.

A Delta spokesperson announced on Wednesday that the airline is offering $30,000 to passengers who were onboard the ill-fated flight. The Delta Care Team is assuring passengers that this financial aid is being provided without any conditions attached and will not affect their legal rights.

All 21 individuals who sustained injuries in the crash have been discharged from the hospital as of Thursday. Fortunately, all 80 occupants of Flight 4819 — comprising 76 passengers and four crew members — managed to survive the harrowing ordeal.
