In Shelter Cove, California, a daring rescue mission was undertaken by the U.S. Coast Guard to save two hikers trapped on the treacherous Lost Coast. One of the hikers had suffered severe injuries from a significant fall.
The Coast Guard sprang into action on Saturday afternoon upon receiving a distress call from the Shelter Cove Fire Department and CAL FIRE. Reports indicated that a hiker had fallen from a steep cliff, resulting in a dislocated shoulder, bleeding, and other potentially critical injuries. Upon reaching the Big Flat area, the Coast Guard helicopter crew located both hikers desperately clinging to the cliff’s edge.
With one hiker dangling over 100 feet above the unstable cliff, the crew had to act swiftly. Despite challenges like limited power and no winds, they successfully executed a complex 160-foot hoist to rescue the injured hiker. The crew had to make quick decisions, including jettisoning fuel to gain necessary power for the operation.
After safely evacuating the first hiker to medical personnel waiting at a nearby airport, the crew returned to hoist the second hiker, who miraculously escaped unscathed. The entire operation required meticulous coordination and communication among the crew and the Shelter Cove Fire Ocean Rescue team.
The rescue operation was further complicated by worsening weather conditions and critically low fuel levels, forcing the crew to rely on a Fuel Tender Truck from CAL FIRE Kneeland Helitack for refueling. Despite these challenges, the Coast Guard crew successfully completed the mission and returned to base.
The Shelter Cove Fire Department highlighted the collaborative efforts of six different agencies and twenty dedicated rescuers, emphasizing the importance of specialized equipment and rigorous training for such operations. Hikers planning to explore the Lost Coast Trail are advised to research their route thoroughly, stick to designated paths, and carry extra supplies for emergencies.
