Notorious thief Gavin Fonti, a shoplifter riding an e-scooter, was forcefully subdued by an undercover officer, as captured in dramatic footage. The 44-year-old Fonti was caught on camera stuffing a bag with stolen meat at a Co-op store situated on East Barnet Road in north London just a few weeks ago. Upon filling his bag, Fonti, who was sought for multiple theft incidents in the vicinity, tried to flee the scene. However, he was met by a plain clothes officer of the Metropolitan Police who had been strategically positioned outside, awaiting the arrival of the prolific thief as part of a covert operation. The footage depicts the instant when the officer lunged at the perpetrator, bringing him down from the scooter and onto the ground before proceeding to make the arrest.
Fonti, whose residence was listed as unknown, confessed to the theft from the store in addition to five theft charges from a nearby BP Garage located on Great North Road. He made an appearance at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on February 3, where he was handed a 20-week prison sentence, alongside four other individuals involved in similar crimes.
Described as “neighborhood policing at its finest”, Fonti’s apprehension formed part of a broader police initiative in the Colindale area which resulted in 18 arrests and 85 charges within a span of four days. The operation, conducted between January 30 and February 2, entailed the identification of the 15 most impacted stores across the borough.
Sergeant Dave Salmon, from the Colindale Emergency Response Policing Team, shared, “This incident exemplifies the effectiveness of neighborhood policing, and thanks to the vigilance and quick response of our officers, we have successfully removed more habitual shoplifters from our streets. We recognize the detrimental effects of shoplifting on businesses, their employees, and the general public. It often serves as a catalyst for other criminal activities and antisocial behavior, hence our proactive measures targeting the most affected establishments. This initiative not only fosters stronger ties between Safer Neighbourhood officers and local businesses but also instills greater trust and confidence in local law enforcement.”
