Mark Lipsitz, the recently appointed CEO of Bar/None Records known for his work with bands such as Ivy and the Feelies, has passed away at the age of 61. He suffered a fatal heart attack on July 5, according to a representative. In a statement released on social media, Bar/None Records fondly remembered Lipsitz’s significant contributions to the label since he joined in 2001.
“The Bar/None family is devastated by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Mark Lipsitz,” the statement read. “Mark was a passionate advocate for artists and a driving force behind the music he championed. He inspired those around him to strive for excellence both as musicians and individuals. His impact on the music industry as a mentor and supporter is immeasurable. Through his connections and friendships, Mark has left an enduring legacy that will continue to enrich us all.”
Lipsitz, a native of Memphis, TN, and a long-term resident of New York City, began his career in the music industry during his time at the University of Kansas, where he managed the college radio station. His journey in the industry included roles at various music companies, with his most notable tenure at Bar/None. He played a key role in signing bands like Ivy to Atlantic subsidiary Seed in the ’90s before moving on to work with artists such as Dar Williams and the Front Bottoms.
During his time at Bar/None, Lipsitz was instrumental in promoting artists like the Langley School Music Project and Architecture in Helsinki, as well as launching a successful vinyl reissue program for acts such as Of Montreal and the Feelies. Recently, he had been involved in the preparations for Ivy’s forthcoming album, “Traces of You,” scheduled for release in September 2025.
The news of Lipsitz’s passing sparked an outpouring of tributes on social media from artists and industry peers who had the privilege of working with him.
