Avoid Using These Surfaces with Magic Erasers

Magic Erasers are known for their powerful cleaning abilities, thanks to their melamine foam composition and built-in cleaning agent. While they can make cleaning easier, T.J. Liles, vice president of Maid Brigade in Atlanta, Georgia, warns that their abrasiveness can be too harsh for certain surfaces. To prevent accidental damage, it is advisable to test the Magic Eraser on a small area first before using it extensively. Here is a list of surfaces to avoid cleaning with a Magic Eraser:

Glossy or High-Gloss Surfaces
Liles cautions that Magic Erasers can scratch or dull lacquered furniture and glossy countertops due to their abrasiveness. Opt for a microfiber cloth with an all-purpose spray for a gentler clean.

Electronic Devices
Devices with special finishes, like laptops and cell phones, are sensitive to damage from Magic Erasers. It is better to use cleaners specifically designed for electronics to avoid harming anti-glare coatings.

Delicate Surfaces
Stainless steel, glass, mirrors, and painted walls can suffer streaks or scratches from Magic Erasers. Liles recommends using a soft microfiber cloth instead for these surfaces.

Non-Stick Cookware
Avoid using a Magic Eraser on non-stick cookware as it can compromise the protective coating. Allow the cookware to soak before gently scrubbing with a sponge or bristle brush.

Your Skin
While a Magic Eraser may seem like a solution for tough substances on skin, it can actually irritate or burn the skin. It is best to use appropriate products for skin care.

Wood Furniture and Floors
Magic Erasers can strip away finishes on wood furniture and floors, so it is advisable to use a microfiber cloth or soft sponge instead, especially on antique or softwood surfaces.

Leather and Suede Upholstery
Fabrics like leather and suede have specific care instructions. Check the cleaning code provided by the manufacturer to avoid causing permanent damage. Avoid using a Magic Eraser on these fabrics.
