NEW YORK (AP) — Shortstop Anthony Volpe returned to the New York Yankees’ lineup on Monday night, just two days after sustaining a left shoulder injury while diving for a ground ball. Volpe sat out Sunday’s 7-5 loss to Tampa Bay but was slated to bat sixth in Monday’s potentially rain-affected series opener against San Diego.
Despite his unsuccessful attempt to make a diving play on a single by Christopher Morel in the eighth inning of Saturday’s game, Volpe remained in the contest, which ultimately led to a two-run rally and Tampa Bay’s 3-2 victory. Both an X-ray and MRI on Volpe’s shoulder came back negative.
Volpe, who celebrated his 24th birthday on April 28, currently holds a .233 batting average with five home runs, 19 RBIs, and four stolen bases in his third season with the Yankees.
