Angel City defender Savy King was hospitalized after collapsing on the field during the team’s match against the Utah Royals in Los Angeles on Friday. Later in the evening, the team announced that King was responsive. Medical personnel administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation to King after she collapsed in the 74th minute of the game. She was taken off the field on a cart with an oxygen mask on her face. Players from both teams gathered for a prayer circle, causing a 10-minute delay in the match. Angel City later tweeted that King was transported to the hospital by EMS and was undergoing further evaluation. The team expressed gratitude for the concern and support from everyone. Angel City assistant coach Eleri Earnshaw stated that King’s family and the team’s medical staff were with her, ensuring she was in good hands. Utah coach Jimmy Coenraets questioned whether the game should have continued after the incident, acknowledging the fear and concern felt by both teams. However, the match did proceed, and King’s condition was being monitored. King, a 20-year-old starter for Angel City, had played in all eight matches of the season so far. She had no goals or assists but had received two yellow cards. Drafted as the second overall pick in 2024 by expansion team Bay FC, King had previously played for the San Jose-based club and had also represented the U.S. in youth national teams. Prior to her professional career, she played for the University of North Carolina.
