However, there are instances when it seems the whales are as curious about us as we are about them.
The term “whale mugging” refers to the exceedingly rare phenomenon where a whale becomes intrigued or captivated by a boat on the water, repeatedly approaching the vessel, nudging against it, and displaying persistent interest over an extended period. Typically, whales tend to ignore stationary boats peacefully floating in the water and often steer clear of loud or moving vessels that may pose a threat to their well-being.
In a related incident captured in a video, a young humpback whale exhibited remarkably different behavior by playfully twirling and frolicking around a boat, even flipping over to reveal her belly, showcasing a profound sense of curiosity.
