In a recent essay co-authored by a founder of the Heritage Foundation, former Vice President Pence expressed concern about the direction of the conservative movement. He warned that the movement is at risk due to what he sees as a shift towards populist fervor and a focus on opposing woke culture rather than upholding traditional conservative values.
Pence highlighted an “existential identity crisis” facing the American right, noting that the movement, once united by principles such as limited government and moral order, now appears divided and lacking a clear purpose. He posed a question to today’s conservatives: Will they uphold enduring principles or give in to populism that strays from conservative ideals?
While Pence did not directly name former President Trump as the source of these concerns, he pointed out several policy issues that align with Trump’s approach during his presidency, such as tariffs, support for Ukraine, anti-woke efforts, and government intervention in corporate behavior.
The essay criticized populist policies that prioritize short-term gains over long-term consequences, cautioning against actions that could undermine conservative values. Pence argued that the conservative movement’s shift towards being anti-woke has led it astray from its core principles, warning that defining conservatism solely by opposition to progressivism is not sustainable.
In response to Pence’s essay, the White House defended Trump’s leadership and the America First movement, asserting that Americans have embraced this approach over traditional politicians. Pence, who has criticized woke culture in his speeches, briefly entered the GOP presidential race in 2024 but ultimately withdrew due to lack of support.
During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” last month, Mike Pence expressed skepticism about running for the White House again but emphasized his commitment to advocating for conservative values. “I aim to be a staunch supporter of the policies and freedoms outlined in the U.S. Constitution,” Pence stated. “My focus will remain on championing the conservative movement, allowing the future to unfold naturally.” Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
