Alleged Mastermind Behind Colombian Senator’s Shooting Revealed!

Bogota, Colombia (AP) — Law enforcement authorities announced on Saturday that the suspected orchestrator of the shooting incident involving a conservative Colombian senator and presidential candidate has been apprehended, nearly a month after the assault took place. Elder José Arteaga Hernández, also known as “Chipi” or “Costeño,” was taken into custody in a neighborhood in the northwest part of Bogota, as stated by National Police Director Maj. Gen. Carlos Fernando Triana. Arteaga and other individuals were previously implicated for being in the vicinity of the Bogota park where Miguel Uribe Turbay was unexpectedly shot on June 7 while delivering a political speech. The attack, carried out by a minor who was subsequently captured attempting to flee, left Uribe injured in the head. Three additional individuals have been detained for their involvement in planning and executing the crime, with the motive still under investigation. Uribe, who had declared his candidacy for the 2026 presidential election in October, continues to receive intensive medical care and has undergone multiple surgeries. As a prominent critic of President Gustavo Petro from his seat in the Senate, Uribe has drawn attention for his outspoken views. The assault has been met with widespread condemnation in a country with a history marred by violence, where drug cartels and insurgent groups have targeted and harmed politicians. Arteaga faces charges that include attempted aggravated homicide, possession and distribution of firearms or ammunition, and exploitation of minors for criminal activities. Interpol issued a red notice for his arrest on Friday. It remains unclear whether Arteaga has legal representation at this time to speak on his behalf. Authorities have indicated that he will appear in court for the first time over the weekend. Triana previously stated that Arteaga has been involved in criminal activities for over two decades, carrying out various illicit activities in Bogota.
