SEOUL (Reuters) – South Korean investigators once again urged the country’s acting president on Saturday to direct the presidential security service to comply with an arrest warrant for the impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol. The security service, supported by military forces, obstructed prosecutors from apprehending Yoon Suk Yeol during a lengthy confrontation within Yoon’s residence on Friday. The arrest warrant for Yoon was obtained in connection to his brief imposition of martial law the previous month.
The Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials, tasked with probing the matter, disclosed on Saturday that it had reiterated its plea to acting President Choi Sang-mok, who also serves as the nation’s finance minister, to instruct the presidential security service to adhere to the warrant. A spokesperson for the finance ministry abstained from providing any comment on the issue. Accordingly, the police have summoned Park Chong-jun, the head of the presidential security service, for questioning set to take place on Tuesday, as reported by Yonhap News.
The declaration of martial law by Yoon on December 3 caught South Korea off guard, resulting in the first-ever issuance of an arrest warrant for a sitting president.
