Accused Trump Assassin to Self-Represent in Trial!

A man in Fort Pierce, Florida, who was charged with attempting to assassinate Donald Trump at his golf course last year, informed a federal judge on Thursday that he wishes to dismiss his court-appointed lawyers and represent himself. Ryan Routh, 59, expressed his readiness to defend himself before a trial jury scheduled for this fall during a hearing before U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon. When asked if he wanted new attorneys appointed for his defense, Routh declined, stating that he will represent himself.

Routh is set to face trial in September, a year after allegedly trying to shoot Trump while he was golfing, only to be stopped by a Secret Service agent. He has pleaded not guilty to charges including attempting to assassinate a major presidential candidate, assaulting a federal officer, and multiple firearm violations. During the hearing, Judge Cannon held a closed-door discussion with Routh regarding potential matters involving attorney-client privilege before resuming the public portion of the hearing.

Judge Cannon questioned Routh for about 30 minutes to ensure he comprehended the seriousness of self-representation in a case that could result in life imprisonment if convicted. Despite acknowledging the risks, Routh, who disclosed having completed two years of college post his GED certification, affirmed his decision to represent himself. The judge also inquired about his understanding of court rules and criminal procedure, to which Routh replied that he had a book.

Judge Cannon refrained from making an immediate decision and stated that she would issue a written order later. She emphasized that the trial start date of September 8 would not be postponed, even if Routh were to represent himself. Prosecutors allege that Routh meticulously planned the assassination attempt on Trump before being apprehended by a Secret Service agent at his West Palm Beach country club.

Law enforcement was aided by a witness who reported seeing Routh fleeing the scene. The witness was flown in a police helicopter to an interstate where Routh was arrested, confirming his identity. Alongside the federal charges, Routh has pleaded not guilty to state charges of terrorism and attempted murder.
