Originally a ski school and TV set, this home in southern Vermont, constructed in the 2010s, has transitioned into its new chapter with the help of designer Jeremiah Brent. It is now serving as the ultimate alpine retreat for one family. While the house enjoys stunning views of the nearby slopes, its interiors were outdated and needed a modern touch. Features like knotty pine wood, orange tones, and commercial details such as exit signs and fire alarms had to be removed. Brent and his team undertook a redesign to cater to the family’s refined taste.
To transform the property into a timeless winter vacation home with four bedrooms and a bunk room, Brent focused on enhancing the architectural elements. Beams and millwork were painted in a matte charcoal color, providing a striking contrast to the soft white walls adorned with decorative plaster. All fireplace surrounds were upgraded, with one featuring a large raw stone sourced from Hudson, New York. Extensive millwork additions were made to improve functionality, including a full mudroom for ski gear.
For hosting guests, Brent created a dedicated room with custom bunks and scalloped ladders. To ensure a cozy and welcoming atmosphere for both children and adults, a loft was designed to accommodate varying group sizes. Brent aimed to give the mountain escape a universal appeal by adopting a minimalist approach to decor, focusing on textures such as sherpa wool, vintage leather, and raw stone.
Despite facing challenges like freezing temperatures and snow storms during installation, the property now fulfills the family’s desire for a rustic yet sophisticated retreat. Brent’s careful design choices, from the living room’s grand fireplace to the sunroom’s airy ambiance, reflect his vision for a space that is both elegant and comfortable.”
Brent shares, “We meticulously crafted the banquette to align perfectly with the flowing curves of the walls.” The banquette sofa was custom-made by Milo Workroom, complemented by custom pillows featuring fabrics from Rogers & Goff and Shoppe Amber. The surrounding decor includes shades from The Shade Store, a chair from Pamono, a table from 1stDibs, lamps from Visual Comfort, and custom lampshades by Illume.
In the powder room, Brent expresses his fondness for designing bold yet simple spaces, stating, “The skirted sink introduces an effortless vibe that harmonizes with the overall aesthetic.” The room features a sconce from Early Electrics, a mirror from Ballard Designs, and fixtures from Atmosyphere.
Moving to the primary bedroom, Brent highlights the unique design opportunity presented by a floating bed frame, allowing for a complete seating arrangement on the opposite side of the headboard. Furnishings in the room include a pendant from Noguchi, a sofa from RH, a cabinet, chair, and coffee table from 1stDibs, a side table from Studio Balestra, and a rug from Kathy Kuo Home.
In the guest bedroom, guests are welcomed by abundant natural light and stunning mountain views, creating a serene retreat after a day on the slopes. The space features walls painted in Saint Sauvant Roman Clay from Portola Paints, with a pendant from Crate & Barrel, a bed from Shoppe Amber Interiors, bedding from The Citizenry, a sofa from Pottery Barn, a coffee table from Andrianna Shamaris, a marble side table from Design Within Reach, and various other decor elements.
Delving into the bunk room, Brent notes the playful addition of scalloped detailing on the ladders, enhancing the room’s whimsical charm. Transforming a commercial-style powder room into a practical space for removing ski gear, Brent repurposed existing tiles after a thorough renovation. He appreciates the central window that introduces natural light into the room’s moody ambiance. The mudroom features shades from The Shade Store and custom cushions by Milo Workroom in Romo fabric.
