Journalists Under Fire in Haiti Gang Attack at Hospital Reopening!

Suspected gang members targeted journalists in Haiti’s capital during the attempted reopening of the largest hospital, causing injuries and fatalities. Interim President Leslie Voltaire confirmed that journalists and police were among the victims of the violent attack, expressing condolences and vowing justice.

The exact number of casualties was not immediately disclosed. Disturbing footage shared online showed apparent fatalities and injuries. Radio Télé Métronome initially reported that seven journalists and two police officers were wounded. Gang violence, dominating much of Port-au-Prince, has led to the closure of vital facilities, including the General Hospital earlier this year.

During the hospital reopening coverage, journalists were caught in the crossfire as gang members opened fire. Gang leader Johnson “Izo” André claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that the gang coalition did not approve of the hospital’s resuming operations. Haiti has a history of violence against journalists, with previous incidents resulting in fatalities.

The ravaged state of the hospital, following gang clashes and looting, highlights the challenges faced by Haiti’s healthcare system. The ongoing violence has strained resources, exacerbated by the threat of water-borne diseases during the rainy season. Healthcare facilities have been destroyed, worsening the already dire health crisis in the country.
