Do you have any beloved holiday dishes that you are eagerly anticipating this season?
One dish that holds a special place in my heart is what we traditionally serve at Thanksgiving, and if I can, I try to convince everyone to have it again on Christmas. It may not be everyone’s favorite, but it’s absolutely delicious – a rutabaga puree made with a blend of rutabaga, carrots, butter, heavy cream, and salt. It’s a delightful side dish, in my opinion. Another favorite of mine is my mother’s raspberry jello salad. Despite being a somewhat old-fashioned dish, it has been a staple at our holiday gatherings for as long as I can remember. This salad combines raspberry jello, crushed walnuts, pineapple juice, and a creamy layer of cream cheese, creating a delectable treat that serves as a refreshing contrast to the savory dishes on the menu.
As the cold and flu season is upon us, do you have any go-to immune-boosting recipes or foods that you swear by to keep yourself and your family healthy?
Personally, I rely on oil of oregano in pill form for its immune-boosting properties, a tip I picked up from my colleagues while filming Suits in cold Toronto weather. Additionally, I believe that each individual’s response to supplementary healing methods varies, but oil of oregano has been particularly effective for me. For my children, who find it too potent, I opt for elderberry syrup as an immune support. In times of need, a nourishing chicken bone broth or homemade chicken soup serves as a comforting and healing option that everyone in the family enjoys.
Could you elaborate on the inspiration behind starting Badlands Ranch and how the initiative has evolved over time?
Being a devoted dog lover and advocate for animal welfare, the idea of launching a dog food brand was presented to me. However, I saw an opportunity to create something distinctive and impactful by incorporating my core values. This led to the inception of Badlands Ranch, a venture driven by a genuine desire to enhance the lives of our beloved pets. My mother and I have been involved in
Attempting to make a difference for beloved creatures that evoke deep compassion and admiration has evolved into a lifelong vocation. This newfound calling has imbued both individuals with a profound sense of purpose that resonates as truly meaningful and impactful. Vital sustenance has played a pivotal role in sustaining the foundation financially and supporting programs that are actively combatting pet overpopulation and the needless euthanizing of animals across the nation.
Badlands Ranch, a beacon of hope for vulnerable animals, has been at the forefront of this noble endeavor. When it comes to nourishing their canine companions, the caretakers at Badlands Ranch opt for recipes rich in lean proteins such as fish, salmon, and chicken. Organ meats, like cow liver, are lauded for their exceptional nutritional benefits, aligning closely with the natural diet of dogs. An unconventional yet potent concoction comprising liver, raw egg, and a hint of turmeric is favored, given turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties that promote joint and gut health. Additionally, ginger is prized for its gut-soothing attributes, underscoring the importance of maintaining a healthy weight and optimal physical condition for dogs.
In addressing anxiety and apprehension commonly experienced by rescued dogs, a simple yet effective remedy involving lemon balm tea has yielded remarkable results. By infusing lemon balm leaves into tea and allowing it to cool before adding it to their water bowls, a sense of calm and tranquility is instilled, offering solace to canines grappling with past traumas and uncertainties.
For compassionate readers seeking ways to support local organizations and shelters this holiday season, a spectrum of options exists. From volunteering precious time to engage dogs in outdoor activities to donating essential supplies like blankets, beds, and toys, every contribution makes a significant impact. Financial assistance, no matter how modest, can also be pivotal in funding crucial spay and neuter initiatives, thereby curbing the cycle of pet overpopulation. Many shelters lack resources to address medical needs, underscoring the importance of monetary support to ensure these animals receive the care they deserve.
In advocating for the adoption of rescue animals over purchasing from breeders, an urgent plea to address the rampant issue of pet overpopulation is voiced. The sentiment underscores the necessity for responsible pet ownership, characterized by unwavering commitment to meet the needs of a new family member. Adequate attention, care, training, and veterinary support are emphasized as essential components of welcoming a rescued pet into one’s home, transcending mere seasonal gestures and embodying a lifelong dedication to their well-being.
