Legendary Actor Art Evans Dies at 82!

American actor Art Evans, best known for his portrayal of Leslie Barnes in the action film “Die Hard 2,” has passed away at the age of 82. The news of Evans’ demise due to complications from diabetes on December 21 was confirmed by his wife, Babe Evans. In a statement shared with Entertainment Weekly, Babe Evans expressed, “Art was not only an incredible actor but a devoted husband, friend, and source of light to everyone who knew him. His laughter, passion, and love of life will be deeply missed. While our hearts are heavy, we celebrate the legacy of joy and inspiration he leaves behind.”

Representatives of Art Evans, LyNea Bell, and Charleen McGuire, also shared their condolences, stating, “Art was a remarkable talent who touched many lives with his work. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Our condolences go out to his wife, Babe, and their family during this difficult time. Art’s legacy will never be forgotten.”

Born Arthur James Evans in 1942 in Berkeley, California, Art had a diverse and accomplished life before embarking on his acting career. He was a junior Olympian in championship diving, a skilled musician proficient in several instruments, and a Vietnam War veteran.

Evans began his acting journey in the early 1970s with minor roles in notable films that would set the stage for his future success. His early credits included roles in Brian De Palma’s “Sisters” (1972), “Claudine” (1974), and “Death Wish” (1974) alongside Charles Bronson.

Finding his stride in the mid-1980s, Evans landed significant roles in films such as “Fright Night,” “Ruthless People,” and the Academy Award-nominated “A Soldier’s Story,” which tackled the issue of segregation in the U.S. Army. However, it was his role as air traffic controller Leslie Barnes in “Die Hard 2” (1990) opposite Bruce Willis that remains one of his most memorable performances.

Throughout his career, Evans continued to work steadily, appearing in various films and television series, including “Tales From the Hood,” “Bitter Harvest,” and “The Story of Us.” He also made guest appearances on popular shows like “Monk” and “The X-Files,” as well as lending his voice to animated series such as “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.”

In addition to his acting accomplishments, Evans was a longtime practitioner of Buddhism with SGI-USA, believing in the philosophy that life and death are integral parts of the universal rhythm. His spiritual beliefs played a significant role in shaping his perspective and providing him with peace and insight throughout his life.

Art Evans is survived by his wife, Babe, their son Ogadae, and their extended family. The couple also had a son, Sage, who preceded Evans in death.
