Zambian Police Foil Witchcraft Plot Against President Hichilema

LUSAKA, Zambia. (AP) — The authorities in Zambia have recently made a significant breakthrough in thwarting a potentially dangerous plot against the country’s President Hakainde Hichilema. According to a police statement released on Friday, two individuals have been apprehended on suspicion of attempting to cause harm to the President through the use of witchcraft. The spokesperson for the police, Rae Hamoonga, identified the arrested individuals as Jasten Mabulesse Candunde, aged 42, and Leonard Phiri, aged 43. Allegations suggest that they were recruited by Nelson Banda, the younger sibling of the fugitive lawmaker Jay Banda, to cast harmful spells on the President.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that Jay Banda had escaped from police custody in August 2024, while facing serious charges related to aggravated robbery. As of now, his whereabouts remain unknown, adding an element of mystery to the unfolding events. The two suspects, Candunde and Phiri, are now facing charges related to practicing witchcraft, possession of mystical items, and acts of cruelty towards animals. From the evidence obtained during the investigation, it appears that the suspects were in possession of various charms, including a live chameleon, and were reportedly involved in activities related to witchcraft.

Hamoonga emphasized that the primary objective of the suspects was to use these charms and rituals to harm the Head of State, President Hakainde Hichilema. The police spokesperson detailed that the suspects had confessed to their intentions and revealed that they had agreed to a payment of $7,400 for carrying out this malicious act. This revelation sheds light on the extent of the alleged conspiracy and the lengths to which individuals were willing to go in their attempt to harm the President through supernatural means.

The attempted use of witchcraft to harm a political leader is a concerning development in a country like Zambia, known for its diverse cultural practices and beliefs. The incident highlights the potential risks posed by individuals who may resort to unconventional and harmful methods to achieve their objectives. The arrest of Candunde and Phiri serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and swift action in addressing threats to national security and the safety of government officials.

President Hakainde Hichilema, as the target of this malevolent scheme, is undoubtedly relieved by the timely intervention of the authorities in uncovering and thwarting the plot against him. The incident underscores the need for heightened security measures and proactive measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. It also raises questions about the prevalence of superstition and belief in witchcraft in contemporary society, and the potential risks associated with individuals exploiting these beliefs for nefarious purposes.

As the investigation into this case continues, the authorities will be working diligently to uncover any additional details and accomplices involved in the conspiracy.
