Not too long ago, an unfortunate audition experience left actor James Marsden with a lingering memory that he recently shared on Live with Kelly and Mark. The esteemed actor, known for his work in films like Jury Duty, received a harsh critique for an old audition he did for the iconic Saturday Night Live. During a conversation with host Mark Consuelos, Marsden humorously reflected on the ill-fated audition that he described as less than stellar. Recounting the events that led to the audition, Marsden explained that a friend from his drama class suggested they try out for SNL together after a nationwide talent search was announced. The audition itself seemed to lack direction, as Marsden recalled, “It wasn’t even something like, ‘Create an interesting character,’ or whatever. It was like, ‘Do whatever silly thing you want to do.'” In an attempt to stand out, Marsden and his friend opted to perform a rather eccentric routine involving clucking like chickens and aimlessly walking around each other. Reflecting on their unconventional choice, Marsden admitted, “Yeah, it was a bad choice,” with a chuckle.
Despite their best efforts, the audition did not result in a coveted spot on SNL for Marsden. However, fate had other plans for the talented actor as he eventually found himself working alongside SNL legend Tina Fey on the popular NBC sitcom 30 Rock. During his time on the show, Marsden confided in Fey about his longtime aspiration to be a part of SNL. Recalling the conversation, Marsden shared, “I did 30 Rock for a bit with Tina Fey, and I said, ‘You know, my dream was always to be on SNL.'” To his surprise, Fey responded optimistically, assuring him, “‘Oh, well, you’ll host at some point.'” Undeterred in his ambition, Marsden clarified, “No, as a regular. I wanna be the guys!” Expressing his love for impressions and character work, Marsden conveyed his passion for the variety of roles that SNL offers its cast members.
Encouraged by his co-hosts, Marsden was reminded of the possibility of hosting SNL in the future. Host Kelly Ripa voiced her support, declaring, “It’s time for you to host that show, I think you’d be amazing,” while Consuelos playfully suggested that Marsden incorporate his infamous chicken routine into his hypothetical hosting gig. Excited by the prospect, Marsden seemed motivated by the idea of potentially returning to the SNL stage in a different capacity.
In addition to his SNL aspirations, Marsden also shared anecdotes from his past experiences, including a moment in his youth when he turned down an opportunity to sing in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular at the age of 18.
