Southern Australia earned the moniker of the “Koala State” following the successful government initiative to reintroduce koalas to their natural habitat after facing near-extinction. The Department for Climate, Environment, and Water has managed to sell over 2,200 Koala State plates, with the proceeds directed towards supporting wildlife carers. These dedicated individuals play a crucial role in safeguarding Australia’s rich natural heritage and have greatly benefited from the license plate program.
The Koala State plates come with a price tag of approximately $150, which includes a $50 donation aimed at koala conservation efforts. The funds raised through the sales of these plates contribute towards purchasing supplies, providing animal healthcare, acquiring essential equipment, and offering training opportunities for wildlife organizations, primarily through the South Australian Wildlife Rehabilitation Grants program. The president of Ostok has highlighted that a recent turf war involving the infamous Sinaloa Cartel has led to a surge in the number of rescued big cats.
In a significant operation in 2024, authorities in Sinaloa, Mexico, managed to rescue a total of 17 big cats from cartel members, with 11 of these rescues taking place within a span of just three months. Tigers were the most commonly rescued species, closely followed by lion cubs. The confiscation of these big cats is crucial for ensuring their well-being, as many are found in distressing physical and psychological conditions at the time of rescue.
