Liberal donor network’s House takeover plan 2026!

The leaders of the Democracy Alliance, a powerful network of liberal donors, have set their sights on flipping control of the US House from Republicans in the 2026 cycle. This strategic priority builds upon the successful gains the group facilitated in New York and California during the recent elections. President of the alliance, Pamela Shifman, emphasized the critical role the House will play in mitigating the impacts of the previous administration. The group is resolute in their commitment to investing in House contests with the aim of securing a robust majority for House Democrats in the upcoming years, following the Democrats’ recent losses.

While a specific budget for the 2026 races has not yet been finalized, the Democracy Alliance channeled over $11 million into efforts that contributed to Democrats flipping House seats in New York. Shifman expressed confidence in the momentum behind their endeavors, stating that they are well-equipped to emerge victorious. Additionally, the alliance is considering investing in upcoming special elections in New York and Florida to fill anticipated Republican vacancies in the House.

Established in 2005, the Democracy Alliance has allocated more than $2 billion to support progressive causes and organizations. With approximately 120 members contributing annual dues of $35,000 each, the group requires a commitment to contribute at least $200,000 to initiatives promoting progressive policies. While the donors remain anonymous, membership comprises labor unions, foundations, and affluent individuals.

Despite a challenging political landscape at the federal level, Democrats secured an additional House seat this year, with Republicans holding 220 seats to Democrats’ 215. The GOP’s majority is poised to tighten further early next year due to impending resignations and job transitions within the party.

Looking ahead to the 2026 midterms, the Democracy Alliance plans to maintain a focus on New York and California to safeguard and build upon the gains made in 2024. Shifman highlighted the success of field organizing efforts in these states, led by labor and activist groups. The alliance remains committed to expanding on this model as they continue their advocacy for progressive policies.

House districts all over the nation will undergo a thorough evaluation to determine the specific targets following a meticulous analysis of data obtained from this year’s elections. Describing the expansion of the Democrats’ voter coalition as a primary goal, it was emphasized by an alliance representative that approximately 90 million eligible voters chose to abstain from voting in the recent election. Referring to this as a significant opportunity for organizing and mobilizing, the representative underscored the importance of capitalizing on such a momentous occasion.
