Russell Brand is facing charges related to rape, indecent assault, and sexual assault that allegedly occurred between 1999 and 2005 involving four women. Following an investigation by several prominent media outlets, including the Sunday Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches in September 2023, the comedian and actor has been interviewed by the police multiple times. The 49-year-old has denied the allegations, stating they are “very, very hurtful,” and maintaining that his relationships were always consensual.
The Metropolitan Police has formally charged Brand with one count of rape, one count of indecent assault, one count of oral rape, and two further counts of sexual assault. The alleged incidents took place in various locations between 1999 and 2005, including Bournemouth and Westminster areas in London. Brand has been summoned to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 2 May, although he is currently believed to be in the United States. In cases where a suspect is abroad, prosecutors typically seek the defendant’s return, and may consider extradition if cooperation is not provided.
Jaswant Narwal from the Crown Prosecution Service announced the decision to charge Brand with the sexual offenses following a thorough review of the evidence gathered during the police investigation prompted by the Channel 4 documentary. Narwal emphasized the importance of upholding the defendant’s right to a fair trial and urged against any actions that could prejudice the legal proceedings. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police stated that support continues to be offered to the women involved, and encouraged anyone with information related to the case to come forward.
Brand initially gained fame as a stand-up comedian, performing at venues such as the Hackney Empire and the Edinburgh Fringe. He later ventured into broadcasting, hosting radio and television shows on platforms like the BBC and Channel 4, and also appeared in Hollywood films.
