ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Multiple crashes resulting in at least three injuries occurred along New Mexico highways and interstates on Tuesday due to intense dust storms, officials reported. One major crash on Interstate 25 between Santa Fe and Albuquerque at State Highway 16 was caused by near zero visibility from blowing dust, as stated by the New Mexico State Patrol and National Weather Service. Some individuals required transportation to a local hospital for treatment of injuries, although the exact number was not confirmed as of Tuesday evening. While the highway was reopened at 3:20 p.m. MT, troopers continued to assist those stranded in the storm and traffic congestion.
In another incident, a significant crash involving at least five semi-trucks was reported in Otero County along U.S. Highway 54, with three prisoners sustaining injuries and being hospitalized. The highway spanning Otero County was closed for 101 miles from south to north due to multiple crashes and poor visibility. Additionally, Interstate 40 near Milagro was shut down following a large crash involving commercial vehicles amid nearby wildfires and limited visibility.
In Roswell, where wind gusts reached 75 mph, segments of U.S. highways 70, 380, and 285 were closed due to reduced visibility. Gusts up to 68 mph were recorded in Albuquerque, causing visibility to drop significantly. The ongoing storm led to flight operations being impacted at Albuquerque’s Sunport. Dust Storm Warnings remained in effect for much of New Mexico as strong wind gusts continued throughout Tuesday evening, with notable gusts reported in various regions.
