Emergency services in southern Spain are currently searching for a married couple who were swept away by flash floods while driving their vehicle. The rising waters led to the evacuation of hundreds of homes, prompting authorities to close roads and cancel classes. Juanma Moreno Bonilla, Andalusia’s regional president, stated that the couple’s off-road vehicle was washed away as they crossed their property in Constantina. Regional officials evacuated 365 homes in the village of Campanillas near Malaga city after a nearby river overflowed, forcing residents to seek shelter in a municipal sports hall. Antonio Sanz, Andalusia’s interior chief, reported that 19 rivers in the region were on red alert for flooding, affecting various areas from the southern coast to locations near Seville and Cordoba. Numerous highways and some rail lines had to be shut down due to rising waters, and emergency services were inundated with calls for help. The police even rescued two dogs in danger of drowning in muddy waters. The recent storms have exacerbated the impact of prolonged drought in Spain, with a pattern of alternating between extreme dry and wet spells linked to climate change.
