According to a source familiar with the situation, wide receiver and kick returner Mecole Hardman has agreed to a one-year deal with the Green Bay Packers. The individual, who requested anonymity, shared this information as the signing has not yet been officially announced, and did not disclose the financial terms. ESPN was the first to report Hardman’s move to the Packers.
Hardman is perhaps most recognized for his game-winning 3-yard touchdown reception from Patrick Mahomes in overtime of the 2023 Super Bowl, securing a 25-22 victory for the Kansas City Chiefs over the San Francisco 49ers. In the previous season, he recorded 12 receptions for 90 yards across 12 games, with his final appearance on Nov. 29 before being sidelined on injured reserve due to a knee problem. Additionally, Hardman rushed five times for 62 yards and a touchdown. Noteworthy is his contribution on special teams, having returned 20 punts and five kickoffs.
Having been primarily associated with the Chiefs since being drafted in the second round in 2019 out of Georgia, the 27-year-old Hardman briefly played for the New York Jets in 2023 before returning to Kansas City mid-season. Throughout his career, he has amassed 178 catches for 2,302 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Hardman’s acquisition provides the Packers with increased flexibility at wide receiver, especially in light of Christian Watson’s anticipated absence due to an ACL injury suffered in the team’s last regular-season game. Furthermore, his proficiency as a return specialist could be of value to the team, considering cornerback Keisean Nixon’s decision to step away from kickoff return duties post the 2023 season in order to focus on his defensive responsibilities.
