Winter Fury Rockies & Plains Brace for Blizzard Conditions and Severe Storms!

After a weekend of active weather across the nation, AccuWeather meteorologists are warning of another approaching storm for the upcoming week. This new storm is expected to bring snow, strong winds, and the potential for severe thunderstorms. The storm’s energy will first impact the West Coast at the beginning of the week, bringing steady rain, coastal winds, and high-elevation snow through Monday night.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Grady Gilman explained, “Heavy snow is forecasted for the Sierra region, with significant amounts expected in the highest terrain. Major passes, including Donner Pass, may see 1-3 feet of snow accumulation.” Travel is expected to be dangerous in these areas, with gusty winds and reduced visibility due to blowing snow. Travelers are advised to check road conditions and be prepared with chains and emergency kits.

As the storm moves over the Rocky Mountains from Monday night into Tuesday, heavy snow is predicted in parts of Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Colorado. The most significant snowfall is expected in Colorado and Wyoming, with up to 30 inches possible in some areas. The system will then move eastward, bringing snow to Interstate 25 in Wyoming and parts of interstates 70 and 80.

Eastern Colorado and the Central Plains will experience mild conditions before the storm arrives. Cities like Denver and Wichita, Kansas, could see temperatures in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit, potentially setting new records. The storm will also bring strong winds from the Rockies to the Plains, with gusts of up to 50 mph in some areas.

Later in the week, the storm will impact the Great Lakes and Northeast, bringing continued windy conditions. Wind gusts of up to 60-70 mph are possible in New Mexico, with the potential for blizzard conditions in some areas. Travelers should stay updated on the weather forecast and take precautions as needed.

Strong winds will create blowing dust in some areas, affecting travelers and potentially causing power outages by bringing down tree branches and powerlines. As the winds shift north and east towards the Plains by Tuesday into Wednesday, accumulating snowfall is expected, with forecasters warning of possible blizzard conditions in a narrow corridor.

In the South Central states, the combination of strong winds, dry conditions, and low humidity levels will heighten the risk of wildfires through Tuesday, particularly in eastern New Mexico and West Texas. Residents are advised to avoid outdoor burning and be cautious of any potential fire hazards.

Severe thunderstorm risk remains along the storm’s warm flank. While the upcoming storm activity is not expected to be as destructive as last week, storms developing Tuesday night may bring gusty downpours and hail to parts of the central Plains.

The risk of severe weather will expand significantly on Wednesday, spanning from the Great Lakes to the northern Gulf shores.
