Dr. Rasha Alawieh, an assistant professor at Brown Medicine with an H-1B visa, visited her family in Lebanon and was detained at Boston Logan International Airport for 36 hours before being sent back to Lebanon over the weekend, defying a federal judge’s order to stop her deportation. Customs and Border Protection allegedly failed to provide justification for her detention and removal, leading to accusations of violating court orders. Alawieh, now in Lebanon, had been working at Brown Medicine and studying in various U.S. institutions before this incident. The court petition highlighted the distress among her colleagues and emphasized the need for a fair resolution. The university is investigating the matter cautiously and the next hearing is set for Monday morning.
