Shock Mookie Betts May Miss Dodgers Tokyo Opener Due to Illness!

The Los Angeles Dodgers may have to start their season-opening Tokyo Series against the Chicago Cubs without shortstop Mookie Betts. Betts, 32, fell ill with flu-like symptoms towards the end of spring training before the team’s trip to Tokyo. Manager Dave Roberts shared that Betts continued to feel unwell during the flight to Japan and subsequent workouts. The star player was unable to participate in an exhibition game against the Yomiuri Giants on Saturday and also missed Sunday’s game versus the Hanshin Tigers. Betts, visibly weakened, had to walk off the field gingerly after a pregame workout. Roberts mentioned that Betts skipped a workout on Friday and tried to join pregame drills on Saturday, but fatigue set in quickly during a light workout on Sunday. The team is monitoring Betts closely, and if he doesn’t improve by Monday, he is unlikely to play in the season opener on Tuesday. Roberts emphasized the importance of Betts’ recovery and avoiding any risk of injury. Betts is expected to be the Dodgers’ shortstop this season after transitioning from right field last year, where he still had a solid performance despite being sidelined for a portion of the season due to a fractured hand. In Betts’ absence, Miguel Rojas is likely to fill in at shortstop, with other options including Tommy Edman, Enrique Hernández, and Chris Taylor.
