Columbia Student Detained Lawyers Request Release on Bail!

A Columbia University student of Palestinian descent, Mahmoud Khalil, who was detained for his pro-Palestinian activism, is seeking bail to be present for the birth of his first child. Khalil, a 30-year-old permanent U.S. resident, was arrested at his university residence but has not been charged with a crime. His lawyers argue that he is not a flight risk and should be allowed to return home as his wife, an American citizen, is due to give birth next month.

Khalil’s arrest has sparked protests and become a focal point for President Donald Trump’s deportation vow against activists involved in protests on U.S. college campuses regarding Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza. The U.S. government is seeking Khalil’s removal due to concerns of adverse foreign policy consequences, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Khalil’s lawyers argue that his detention stifles his freedom of speech and urge for his release, highlighting his intention to assist his wife and start a job at a human rights organization in New York if granted bail. They emphasize that Khalil has no criminal record and enjoys support from classmates, professors, and friends.

The Justice Department did not immediately comment on the case. Federal authorities have searched student residences at Columbia University following Khalil’s arrest, investigating possible terrorism law violations during protests. Additionally, a Columbia student from India had her visa revoked and left the country, while a Palestinian student was arrested for overstaying her expired visa.
