The biggest question at Boston Red Sox spring training camp seems to have been answered. After initially resisting the idea of moving from third base to designated hitter, slugger Rafael Devers has now shown a more flexible attitude. In a recent conversation with manager Alex Cora and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, Devers expressed his willingness to adapt to the team’s needs for the upcoming season.
“We’ve had discussions, and I’m prepared to do whatever is best for the team,” Devers stated through a translator. “I’m here to contribute and have already communicated my stance. I’m focused on playing and helping the team win.”
Devers’ change in perspective contrasts with his earlier reluctance to consider a switch when asked about the possibility of playing DH due to the arrival of Alex Bregman at third base. However, Devers has now embraced the idea of potentially starting the season as a DH to allow Bregman to assume his position at third base.
As Devers continues to recover from shoulder inflammation that kept him out of Grapefruit League games this spring, he aims to regain his form and timing at the plate. While Devers’ defensive metrics may not be as strong as Bregman’s, his offensive contributions are significant. With the season opener approaching, Devers is focused on preparing himself to be an asset to the team from the designated hitter position.
The Red Sox will kick off the 2025 MLB season on March 27 against the Texas Rangers, and Devers is determined to be fully prepared to contribute when the time comes.
