Scheduled to meet with Russian President Putin, Witkoff’s visit follows Ukraine’s acceptance of a U.S. proposal for a 30-day ceasefire. Known for his successful negotiation skills, Witkoff previously secured a prisoner swap that freed an American teacher in Russia. His diplomatic finesse and collaboration with leaders like Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have been instrumental in achieving positive outcomes. Additionally, Witkoff played a pivotal role in brokering a Mideast ceasefire deal before Trump’s inauguration. Longtime friends, Trump and Witkoff first met during an encounter at a deli shop. Witkoff, a real estate developer and investor, has been a close friend and golf partner of Trump for many years. Although he played a less prominent role during Trump’s first term, Witkoff served on the board of trustees for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Their friendship began in the 1980s when Witkoff, then working for a real estate law firm, handled a deal for Trump. A few years later, they met at a deli where Trump asked Witkoff to order him a ham and Swiss cheese sandwich. This encounter led to a lasting friendship. Witkoff has not only been a friend but has also contributed millions to Trump’s political causes and partnered with him on various business ventures, including the family cryptocurrency project, World Liberty Financial.
Witkoff, now the chairman and CEO of his namesake real estate firm based in Florida, has a history of supporting Trump’s endeavors. He has been by Trump’s side in business and on the golf course, including during a troubling incident in West Palm Beach, Florida, when Trump’s life was threatened. Witkoff also played a role in Trump’s political campaigns, speaking at the Republican National Convention and assisting in reconciling Trump with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis after a fallout from DeSantis’ failed presidential campaign.
After Trump’s election victory, he appointed Witkoff as one of the co-chairs of his inaugural committee and later as his special envoy to the Middle East. Witkoff’s responsibilities have since expanded significantly, reflecting his deep involvement in Trump’s political and business affairs.
