Exclusive Alec Baldwin’s Rust Crew Quits on Crucial Day Before Cinematographer’s Death Doc!

A recent documentary about the film “Rust” uncovered that the camera crew left the set during a crucial day of filming, including the pivotal “biggest shootout” scene. The film’s cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, tragically passed away on Oct. 21, 2021, when a gun fired by actor Alec Baldwin went off on the set in New Mexico. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed Baldwin’s involuntary manslaughter charge following a trial where the defense argued that the state had not disclosed all relevant evidence. The documentary, “Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna,” which premiered on March 11, delves into the safety concerns of the cast and crew that ultimately led to the fatal accident.

On the day of the incident, Hutchins and director Joel Souza had to work with just one camera after the camera crew walked out. Special effects coordinator Thomas Gandy revealed in the documentary that typically multiple cameras and video monitors are used, but due to the walkout, Hutchins and Souza were placed in front of the camera in a potentially dangerous situation.

The documentary highlighted statements from first camera assistant Lane Luper and other crew members who left the set over concerns about safety protocols, particularly regarding the handling of firearms. Luper expressed worries about the lax COVID policies, gun safety practices, and lack of rehearsals on set. Despite raising these concerns with production, he did not directly communicate them to Hutchins.

The film sheds light on the events leading up to the tragic accident and the safety issues that were prevalent on the set of “Rust.”

Frances Fisher, known for her role in “Titanic,” expressed concerns regarding the safety on the set of the film “Rust” from the very first day of filming. She shared an incident where an armorer approached her and Alec Baldwin with an armful of guns, which made her uneasy. Fisher described the behavior of the armorer, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, as unprofessional and sloppy. Despite recognizing the potential dangers, Fisher regretted not speaking up about her concerns to Gutierrez Reed and Baldwin, fearing to cause any disruptions. In the end, Gutierrez Reed was sentenced to 18 months in prison for her involvement in the accidental shooting that led to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The tragic incident deeply affected the cast and crew, with initial hopes for Hutchins’ recovery shattered when news of her passing spread online before being officially confirmed.
